Why Wojciech Wencel, not Joseph Conrad? Changes in the lists of school reading have been debating for years, but what's the point? How much ideological melancholy in the debates, and how much accurate reflection on the education system? Can the school canon of books affect who the student will be in the future? Will a good citizen be the reader of "Pan Tadeusz" or "Harry Potter"? Regardless of whether there is more or less school in Bruno Schulz or Milosz, reading in Poland is not growing. So maybe the reading canon is an experience, a pattern of Polishness sought by all sides of ideological struggles? Is school reading more important, or just reading books?
