To Ask Anyway. Meeting with Katarzyna Surmiak-Domańska
Katarzyna Surmiak-Domańska is a reporter associated with Gazeta Wyborcza. In 2015, she authored the reportage Ku Klux Klan. Tu mieszka miłość (Ku Klux Klan. Here Lives Love), which reached the finals of the Nike Literary Award. To write the piece, Katarzyna went to the south of the United States, put on a white hood and stood under a burning cross as a guest of the KKK Knights Party National Congress in Arkansas. How good an actor must a reporter be and how much can they risk?
The meeting is accompanied by a stage reading of excerpts from Ku Klux Klan. Tu mieszka miłość directed by Maciej Podstawny. The idea of the Ku Klux Klan was born after the Civil War as a drunken soldiers’ joke. This is where their hoods and the levels of initiation reminiscent of masonic structures come from, the ideology of the organisation was shaped in subsequent years. During the reading, the strangely familiar ideas, slogans and words are uttered in a light funny manner. The creators also used popular American songs from the beginning of the 20th century.
