The final countdown to the 34th edition of Malta Festival has begun, starting on Saturday, September 7th, and running through Sunday, September 15th. During these days, Poznań will host hundreds of artists from around the world, transforming the city into Poland’s cultural capital for over a week. Among the more than 100 events, there will be extraordinary theater performances, concerts, and meetings with inspiring personalities.

“On September 7th, we open a new chapter in the over thirty-year history of Malta Festival. Over 9 days, more than 500 artists from 20 countries will perform in Poznań. Participants can look forward to 124 events in total. This includes over 200 hours of theater performances, music, inspiring conversations, and workshops,” says Dominika Kulczyk, the patron of Malta Festival. “The preparation of a festival with such a diverse and extensive program would not have been possible without the hundreds of people involved in its organization. I want to thank them all from the bottom of my heart for their hard work and passion. Together, we have not only preserved this unique festival, but we have also given it an unparalleled, feminine character. I deeply believe that the energy released by this year’s Malta will stay with its audience for a long time and unite us under the shared message ‘For Love!’” she adds.

One of the events kicking off the 34th edition of Malta Festival is the installation Dominoes, composed of 7,200 elements, which will be assembled by more than 300 people. Over 9 festival days, in 30 locations, 124 events will take place, featuring over 500 artists from 20 countries. This includes 70 hours of performances, 80 hours of live music, 50 hours of discussions, as well as 10 film screenings, 37 workshops, and 19 meetings and panel discussions. Perhaps the most impressive number related to this year’s Malta? Over 50 tons of sand will be used to create an artificial beach for the climate opera Sun & Sea. It’s also worth noting that admission to most festival attractions is free.

This year’s Malta Festival will be highlighted by the arrival of Tim Robbins—an Oscar-winning actor who will present his original vaudeville show, “Upside Down.” Poznań will also be the next stop on the world tour of “Elisabeth Costello” by Krzysztof Warlikowski and the New Theatre. The festival will also showcase the opera “I, Şeküre,” inspired by themes from Orhan Pamuk’s novel “My Name is Red.” The Nobel Prize-winning author will attend the performance and participate in a discussion moderated by journalist Michał Nogaś.

The music program is headlined by the exceptional group ANOHNI and the Johnsons, whose latest album appeared on numerous best-of-2023 lists. The main star of the outdoor concert at Lake Malta will be Parov Stelar—the beloved Austrian producer will perform with a full live band, energizing the audience with his unique, swing-inspired sound.

Malta is also about street performances, shows, and happenings that continue the festival’s tradition of enlivening urban spaces. A key part of the program is the Witches section, which promotes an alternative, historically informed definition of the term—witches as “those who know.” This will be an opportunity to meet extraordinary women who will share their experiences through panel discussions, workshops, and film screenings.
