A FESTIVAL OF THEATRE AND PERFORMANCE – MOVEMENT, DANCE, TOUCH
The 35th Malta Festival will open on Friday, June 20, at the Poznań International Fair with Tilda Swinton and Olivier Saillard. “Embodying Pasolini” is their artistic tribute to the celebrated Italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini. The Oscar®-winning Scottish actress will don costumes from films such as “The Gospel According to St. Matthew”, “Oedipus Rex”, and “Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom”, breathing new life into them. This performance, staged only once a year in a carefully selected location worldwide, has previously been presented in Paris, Athens, and Taipei. In 2025, it will be showcased in Poznań from June 20 to 23.
The jubilee edition will also feature the Polish premieres of three theatrical spectacles from across Europe: “The Rite of Spring” from Italy, “ULTRAFICCIÓN nr. 1 /Fracciones de tiempo” from Spain, and “RoZéo” from France. The first, created by Dewey Dell – helmed by the Castellucci siblings and Vito Matera – will envelop audiences in an audiovisual intensity at Aula Artis. A fascinating reinterpretation of Igor Stravinsky’s legendary ballet, it blends various dance forms from ballet to breakdance with striking light effects, surreal soundscapes, and an organic set design. “The Rite of Spring” will take you on a one-of-a-kind journey into sensory delirium on June 21-22.
Meanwhile, the open-air spectacle “RoZéo”, freely accessible at Poznań’s Old Market Square, is an aerial performance inspired by nature – particularly the eternal power of water and wind. Suspended high above the ground on ropes, harnesses, and various structures, the artists challenge gravity itself. Combining elements of circus spectacle and aerial acrobatics with poetic audiovisual narration and live music, the performance will be presented four times: June 21 and 22.
On Saturday, June 21, at Polanka nad Maltą, the first of three performances of “ULTRAFICCIÓN nr. 1 /Fracciones de tiempo” by the Catalan collective El Conde de Torrefiel, led by Tanya Beyeler and Pablo Gisbert, will take place. This multisensory experiment blurs the boundaries between theatre, immersive experience, and visual arts. The open-air spectacle begins at the moment when day meets night and unfolds between sunset and full nightfall, subtly dissolving the line between reality and fiction. Devoid of traditional imagery, this performance is woven from words and sounds, without a conventional stage. Instead, the setting is Polanka nad Maltą, its surrounding landscape, and a screen – the main vehicle of the narrative. How do evolving definitions of truth and fiction in the digital age shape our perception of reality? You will find out from June 21 to 23.
