A SERIES OF TALKS ABOUT WOMEN, MAGIC, AND EMANCIPATORY NARRATIVES

5/02/2025

WIE(dźma) is a unique series of discussions organized by Kulczyk Foundation, Malta Festival, and Local Girls Movement. This initiative explores the figure of the Witch – a wise, independent woman who has often been stigmatized and persecuted throughout history. It creates a space for conversations about language, culture, history, and pop culture, all of which have shaped narratives about women who defy social norms.

The meetings will examine how the perception of women as witches has evolved over the centuries, the mechanisms of social control behind their persecution, and how contemporary culture, mass media, and modern trends are redefining these figures. The discussions will feature researchers, writers, and experts, including Anna Jankowiak (known as Wiedźma od Wiedzy), Angelika Kucińska, Weronika Harzyńska, and Agnieszka Budnik, the creator of the Raport z Literatury podcast. The conversations will be moderated by local activists Karolina Olszak and Aleksandra Hromada, offering diverse perspectives—from historical witch trials to linguistic oppression and feminist reinterpretations.

The WIE(dźma) series is not just a journey through history and mythology but also a reflection on how past narratives continue to shape our reality and the identity of contemporary women.

A Connection to Malta Festival 2024

The WIE(dźma) series is closely linked to the sculpture commemorating one of the first women in Poland burned at the stake, presented during Malta Festival 2024. Attendees will have the opportunity to see the Chwaliszewo Witch sculpture by Alicja Biała, which is awaiting its final placement following official procedures.
