DAY FIVE: HEROINES’ STORIES
The fifth day of the Malta Festival revolves around the lives of women from different historical periods – from antiquity to the present. Malta continues its thematic cycles and introduces new threads.
“Who is Baba Yaga to you?” Participants of the workshop “I am Baba Yaga,” led by Anna Jankowiak and Agata Kominiak at 5 PM in the Women’s History Museum Foundation building, will explore this question. This will be an opportunity to meet the famous witch as a guide of souls. Registrations for the workshop are currently closed.
The third guest of Michał Nogaś in the “Women’s Voices” series will be Elżbieta Cherezińska – a theater expert and author of historical novels, specializing in medieval history, revealing the lives of women forgotten by mainstream history. The meeting will begin at 5 PM in the Festival Club.
The drama Cassandra was written by one of the most outstanding figures of Ukrainian literature, poet and playwright Lesya Ukrainka, over a hundred years ago. It tells the story of the mythological Cassandra, daughter of King Priam of Troy, who was granted the gift of prophecy but cursed by Apollo so that no one would believe her predictions. In the interpretation of the Immigrant Theater – created by women from Ukraine and Belarus – this story is told in three languages, emphasizing the myth’s aspect of mutual understanding. Cassandra, directed by Olha Hryhorash, will be staged at 7 PM at the Stage on the Floor.
Melodrama by Anna Smolar is not a play about addiction, an emptied bottle, the drama of a hangover, or the drinker themselves. It is not a play about the romantic myth of the self-destructive sensitive soul or genius, who is allowed to do anything and everything. Instead, it asks: who is the person in the background? Who is the eternally secondary character, the co-dependent person? Answers to these questions will be explored at 6 PM at Teatr Nowy, when actress Anna Ilczuk takes the stage.
At 8 PM on Freedom Square, the acclaimed Biuro Podróży Theater will present Kaspar. It is a reinterpretation of the story of Kaspar Hauser – the “wolf child,” the “orphan of Europe,” and one of the greatest biographical mysteries in history.
Meanwhile, between 7 PM and 10 PM in the festival club, Italian DJ Elisa Bee, who is fascinated by the sounds of the past as well as experimental and unusual phenomena shaping the future of music, will perform her captivating set.
The usual program highlights include morning hatha yoga sessions, Afro dance, screenings of selected episodes of The Domino Effect at Kino Muza, and various eco-friendly activities in the Green Energy Zone.
