DAY FIVE: THE DIVINE RÓISÍN TAKES THE STAGE!
Malta has already proven that it’s unfazed by squalls or scorching heat. Now it’s time for a real hurricane of emotions, brought on by Tuesday’s theatrical premieres and ecstatic musical experiences, courtesy of one and only Róisín Murphy and Poté.
Monday at the festival is behind us, along with the final performance of “Embodying Pasolini” by Tilda Swinton and Olivier Saillard. The star-studded duo was rewarded with thunderous applause! Another highlight was the powerful performance “Periods Without Taboos. Change Starts with US,” involving students from all over Poznań, Dominika Kulczyk, and the Pogłosy Choir. People from across Poland joined online to perform the manifesto-song. The evening concerts by ROYA and L’Impératrice provided a truly festive atmosphere. Malta doesn’t stop! At 9:00 AM, a great way to start the day: the second edition of “Ballet Mornings” – open classical dance workshops held in the historic building of the Ballet School on Gołębia Street. This time, adults and teenagers will get a chance to explore the basics of historical dance under the guidance of Professor Leszek Rembowski.
On Tuesday, the Festival Club at Plac Wolności will continue with women-focused events. The “Female Roles” improv workshop (10:00 AM) will invite participants to examine archetypes, roles, and social expectations placed on women, encouraging spontaneity, body awareness, and connection within a safe and creative environment.
From 1:00 PM, the screen printing workshop returns to the Festival Club, where you can design your own prints on textiles or festival bags you bring along. Take home a unique souvenir from the festival!
At 2:00 PM in the Festival Club, the panel “In Search of The Women Before Us” will be led by Paulina Kirschke – journalist, researcher, and author of herstory guides. Participants will create genealogical trees and symbolic mandalas commemorating the stories of their mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers.
As part of the literary series “Women’s Voices,” Michał Nogaś and the Festival Club audience will meet at 6:00 PM with Claudia Durastanti – author of the prestigious Premio Strega-awarded “Strangers I Know,” which explores themes of identity, family relations, and the female experience at the intersection of languages and cultures.
At 6:00 PM at CK Zamek, the opening of the festival’s accompanying exhibition will take place – the vernissage of Jan Baszak’s installation “Letztraum”. Bathed in orange light and filled with sculptures of inhuman, imaginative figures, the space will be open for viewing from Wednesday to Friday starting at 12:00 PM.
Tuesday theatre brings two premieres – both starting at 7:00 PM. At the Polish Theatre, Piotr Pacześniak’s “Querelle” will be presented – a performance inspired by the prose of Jean Genet, guiding the audience through a story of two murders wrongly pinned on one man by the Breton police. The play will be staged three times as part of the Malta Festival.
The second premiere of the day – also shown three times – is “There Is Only One,” directed by Pamela Leończyk, with a script by Daria Sobik. It tells the story of a difficult, ambivalent mother-daughter relationship. The unusual stage design features works by Anna Myszkiewicz, which by day will be displayed in an exhibition at Scena Robocza in Poznań, curated by Aleksandra Pietrzak.
In the evening, at 9:00 PM at Hall No. 6 of the Poznań International Fair, Róisín Murphy will perform – the incredibly charismatic vocalist and queen of contemporary electropop! Her hypnotic concerts are wild interdisciplinary spectacles blending music, visual art, and cosmic fashion. The evening will kick off at 7:30 PM with Poté, who won over Malta’s audience last year as the curator of the Festival Club’s DJ programme. This year, we’ll get to hear his brand-new original tracks. It’s going to be an unforgettable night!
As part of “Women’s Cinema,” we’ll see Kinga Dębska’s film “Playing Hard”: a story about three women from different generations struggling with alcohol addiction. After the screening – which begins at 9:00 PM in the Quadro Passage on the Old Market Square – there will be a discussion with director Kinga Dębska, actress Dorota Kolak, and psychologist and psychotherapist Julia Bączek from SWPS University.
Later in the evening, the Festival Club will once again host performances by artists from Local Girls Stage – a female DJ collective that perfectly represents Poznań’s club scene.
Roaming through the city will be the spectacular La Confizerie – a French band combining disco, techno, and Latin music. Just watch – your feet won’t be able to resist dancing!
