DAY SEVEN: A STORM AT THE OLD SLAUGHTERHOUSE
It’s day seven, and there’s still no rest in sight. On the contrary! The final weekend of the 35th edition of the Malta Festival is just around the corner. On Thursday, we’ll welcome the festival’s special guest to Poznań — Agnieszka Holland. Ahead of us lies the final installment of “Women Talking” and the performance of a bold reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest.”
Wednesday brought no shortage of thrills. Parini Secondo captivated audiences on Plac Wolności and the Old Market Square with two performances — both of which you can catch again today! The concert program wrapped up with brilliant jazz sets by BADBADNOTGOOD and hoshii. Check out our recap of Malta’s sixth day!
So, what’s in store for today? We begin gracefully at 9:00 a.m. at the Ballet School on Gołębia Street, where another session of “Ballet Mornings” will take place. This time, the program features jazz dance under the guidance of Professor Krystyna Frąckowiak.
Starting at 1:00 p.m., we invite you to the Festival Club at Plac Wolności, where we say it loud and clear: “Create, renew, SCREEN PRINT!” The workshop is open to everyone who wants to breathe new life into their bags, T-shirts, and textiles. If you haven’t gotten your Malta keepsake yet — now’s your chance!
At 5:00 p.m., we head to Plac Wolności for another showing of “SPEEED” — a Parini Secondo performance with music by Bienoise, inspired by Japanese eurobeat, Tokyo club aesthetics, and anime-style choreography. Colorful costumes, stunning choreography, and pulsating music will transport us through time and space!
At 6:00 p.m. in the Festival Club, we present the fourth and final installment of the “Women Talking” series. Michał Nogaś will speak with Eliza Clark — a British author nominated for the Women’s Prize Futures Award and named one of the most promising young writers by Granta magazine. She’ll discuss her newly published novel Penance, released by Wydawnictwo Poznańskie, hailed by critics as a social media-era response to In Cold Blood. The question “who did it” becomes far from straightforward.
For the last time at the festival, we’ll witness Piotr Pacześniak’s mesmerizing “Querelle” — a performance inspired by the prose of Jean Genet. The show will be staged at 7:00 p.m. at the Polski Theatre.
At 8:30 p.m. at the Old Market Square, we’ll see “HIT OUT” once again — a dance performance by Parini Secondo, where jumping rope goes far beyond choreography and sets the intense rhythm of the entire spectacle.
At 9:00 p.m., “Women’s Cinema” returns to Pasaż Quadro. This time, we’ll screen A Woman Alone by Agnieszka Holland. After the film, there will be a meeting with the director herself — a Golden Globe winner and three-time Oscar nominee, as well as the star of Malta Festival’s second weekend!
Also at 9:00 p.m., on the Scena Robocza stage, we’ll see the final performance of “There Is Only One,” directed by Pamela Leończyk with text by Daria Sobik — an intimate and moving story about the bond between mother and daughter.
From 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the Festival Club, we’ll be dancing to the rhythms of the Local Girls Stage!
The evening will belong to Teatr Biuro Podróży and director Paweł Szkotak — after a year-long break, the troupe returns to Malta with the premiere of “The Tempest” at the Old Slaughterhouse. Inspired by Shakespeare’s drama, this story of exile, power, and revenge gains a new perspective, with Prospera portrayed as a woman. Only Malta showing of the play begins at 10:00 p.m. Admission is free!
Keep your eyes peeled throughout the city for Bandakadabra! These audience favorites, who were one of Malta’s biggest sensations last year, are back. But this is more than just an encore — the Italian ensemble will once again sweep us away with their hypnotic fusion of jazz and techno!
