Project Elimu was founded in 2017 and aims to give children from Kibera supplementary education, a chance to interact with art, and ultimately escape the cycle of poverty. One of its main programs is Kibera Ballet School. In 2017 Project Emily supported 24 children, and since then 50000 children have been benefited from the program.

Michael Wamaya is a dancer and activist, nominated for the prestigious Global Teacher Prize. Thanks to his talent and determination, he escaped the slums of Kenya and studied in Dutch schools. Now, he leads Project Elimu, an arts school where children from Kibera — one of the largest slums in the world — learn ballet. For the Malta Festival audience, he will conduct energetic Afro dance workshops!

Though his career has taken off and he could continue to make waves globally, he chose to return to Kenya to give children the same gift that allowed him to break free: dance. Along with that comes dignity, education, and self-confidence. Mike Wamaya and a group of his students will come to the Malta Festival at the invitation of Dominika Kulczyk as part of the 11th anniversary celebration of the Kulczyk Foundation.

On Friday, September 13th, we will witness a dance performance and flash mob by Project Elimu at MTP, Hall No. 2.
