Jan Baszak’s sculptural installation will respond to contemporary moods and aesthetic longings. A gap in the existing order that opens up to new perspectives. A redefinition of the social construct. A reaction to a reality that triggers fear. A gesture of hope, change, and a smile on a tear-streaked face. An autumn that lasts all year long. “Letztraum” will primarily be an egalitarian space for interspecies cohabitation – a place resembling a freestanding structure, a dedicated room, a greenhouse, or a shelter. A den, a sculpture, and an installation built from textile scraps and metal. A melancholic world in amber hues, a ruin in the making, collapsing under the weight of weeds. It will be a space of inclusive co-presence: of people, leather-and-sock creatures, non-human beings, ghosts, and other entities pushed out of everyday experience. A room bathed in orange light. A sunset. The last rays of the sun pleasantly stinging the eyes. The final moment of warmth and calm. Baszak’s installation will become a shared, introspective breath—one that finally breaks away from binary divisions.

Jan Baszak is a graduate of the Academy of Art in Szczecin (2019) and the University of the Arts in Poznań (2017). He lives and works in Berlin, where he creates works at the intersection of intimacy and melancholy. His sculptures are made from post-human materials and reclaimed textiles. In his practice, he explores the complex relationships between humans and non-human beings, the mysticism of interspecies eye contact, and proposes visions of communities founded on the principles of Halloween-style egalitarianism.
