The Old Market Square as an opera stage? Of course! Lyrical Minutes in the City is an outdoor project by Dirk Opstaele and the Slovenian Bunker collective that brings opera into the urban space. The performance unfolds within everyday situations, where singing and music suddenly emerge, transforming familiar places into a stage.
Lyrical Minutes in the City develops in the city as a series of brief, unexpected events. It begins with ordinary situations – walking through the square, a conversation, work – which gradually shift into operatic form. Voices appear where they are not expected, and simple gestures take on a different weight and meaning.
The performance does not establish a clear boundary between stage and audience. The city becomes the site of action, and those present within it become participants, whether or not they are aware of the structure of the event.
The form is based on a simple mechanism: transforming everyday reality through music and the presence of the performer. What is familiar and repetitive is momentarily displaced – from reality towards fiction, from observation towards experience.
Lyrical Minutes in the City functions as an intervention in public space – brief, but distinct. It leaves behind a shift in perception, changing the way a place and situation are seen, even if only for a moment.
