The exhibition will present examples of conceptual and design processes in the form of drawings, analyses, and spatial models leading to the creation of theatrical performances presented, among others, within the framework of the Malta Festival. Some of the materials on display form part of the history of this event, complemented by photographic documentation of the performances. The reproduced drawings presented in the exhibition are originally part of the collection of the Silesian Museum in Katowice.

The second part of the exhibition will feature drawing series constituting a form of a “potential spectacle” (in potentia) without any stage of realization. This body of drawings partially refers to Janusz Andrzej Zajdel’s prophetic literary work Limes Inferior (1979), a work of sociological science fiction set within the spaces of the dystopian city of Argoland. The remaining drawing cycles are independent and autonomous graphic entities arising from the author’s inner spatial and formal intuition.

Bohdan Cieślak – interior architect, stage designer, draftsman, and painter. Author of more than thirty theatrical stage designs realized on major Polish stages of dramatic theatre, dance, and animation theatre. He collaborated with artists such as Lech Raczak (longtime artistic director of the International Malta Festival in Poznań) and Ewa Wycichowska (director of the Polish Dance Theatre in Poznań). His scenographic works – including drawings, designs, and stage maquettes numbering several hundred objects – form part of the collection of the Silesian Museum in Katowice (Polish Scenography Centre) and have been exhibited during the artist’s solo exhibitions at the Silesian Museum and the National Museum in Poznań. He also participated in the collective exhibition Virtuosos of Imagination: Drawings of Spaces and Figures by Contemporary Artists from the Collection of the Silesian Museum, alongside artists such as Tadeusz Kantor, Jerzy Skarżyński, Jerzy Gurawski, Jan Berdyszak, Janusz Wiśniewski, and Jadwiga Mydlarska-Kowal.
