A young theatre director from Ukraine sets off on a journey across the country in search of a modern equivalent of Hamlet. Her play becomes the starting point for a fascinating portrait of the young generation of Ukrainians, whose lives have been marked by war and numerous political upheavals.
“The Hamlet Syndrome” shows young Ukrainians who grew up in the shadow of conflict and political turmoil. The film is based on the preparations for a theater play loosely inspired by Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”. Theatrical rehearsals, juxtaposed with the personal stories of the characters, create a moving picture of a generation trying to cope with the traumas of war and a painful past – which now, in the face of the Russian invasion, becomes their present.
For the participants, the performance becomes a place where they can express their emotions and questions, including the key one: to be or not to be? “The Hamlet Syndrome” documents the creation of this performance, offering an intimate insight into the lives of the first generation of Ukrainians born after the fall of the USSR, trying to influence the future of their country and find their own way in difficult times.
The meeting after the show will be led by Aleksandra Klich (Sestry).
