Who is the ‘nigger’? Who was he or she yesterday? Who are they today? To me? To us? In David Wark Griffith’s 1915 movie The Birth of a Nation, the ‘nigger’ led the white protagonists to insanity. The ‘nigger’ of today is also a gay person, a Muslim, a woman in a headscarf, an Arab, a refugee, a Jew. The fixation on the Other is evolving. We are still made up of various borrowings from alien entities, and have, therefore, always been beings of the borderline.
