This discussion will explore the power of language, its historical evolution, and its role in the marginalization of women who have defied social norms. From historical narratives of witches and heretical women to contemporary pop culture and social media, we will examine how language has been used both as a tool of oppression and as an instrument of liberation—especially in the context of feminist movements.

ABOUT THE WIE(dźma) SERIES

WIE(dźma) is a series of discussions organized by Kulczyk Foundation, Malta Festival, and Local Girls Movement. It focuses on the figure of the Witch—a wise, independent woman who has historically been stigmatized and persecuted. The series creates a platform to examine how language, culture, history, and pop culture have shaped narratives about women who challenge social norms.

Each session explores how perceptions of women as witches have evolved over centuries, the mechanisms of social control behind witch hunts, and how modern culture and media redefine these figures. The discussions feature researchers, writers, and experts, providing perspectives ranging from witch trials and linguistic oppression to feminist reinterpretations and reclaiming narratives.

The WIE(dźma) series is not only a journey through history and mythology but also a reflection on how past narratives continue to shape our contemporary reality and women’s identities.

All discussions take place at Malta Festival Office, Ratajczaka 44, Poznań. Admission is free.
